JODI R. WEISS
PeaceKeeper Cause-Metics™

2007 NAWBO-NYC Signature Awards
Promise Award Honoree

Jody Weiss — After traveling the world and seeing so much hardship among women, Jody Weiss decided to make a difference. Her company, Wisdom Says, Inc. developed a line of natural cosmetics, called PeaceKeeper Cause-Metics™, for which all profits, after taxes, are used to support women’s health advocacy causes, including breast cancer, heart disease and osteoporosis—as well as human rights issues around the world. For Jody, cosmetics are about empowerment. She explains, “If every woman in the United States were to buy just one PeaceKeeper product a year, we would be able to give millions of dollars to women who can’t afford to buy even one lipstick.”

The Foundation
PeaceKeeper Cause-metics put your mouth where your money is...

For Jody Weiss, it all started when she was going through customs at an airport in New Delhi. That’s when she was pulled out of line by a female agent, placed in a small room, and had her purse dumped out onto the table. The agent then proceeded to rummage around until she came upon a bottle of nail polish. “She painted a quick coat onto her nails, put the contents back into the bag and sent me out without a word of explanation,” says Weiss. This experience had a lasting impact on Weiss, revealing the universal appeal of makeup and the importance of being able to control one’s appearance and inspiring her to start PeaceKeeper Cause-metics.

Combining her sports marketing history with a politically active upbringing and the influence of her fashion-designer mother, Weiss created PeaceKeeper to develop cruelty-free beauty products while at the same time raising money for women’s health and human rights organizations around the world. “We’re a company that gives all of our profits after taxes to specific non-profit organizations that address issues (such as) domestic abuse, genital mutilation, and breast cancer, to name a few,” she says. The company’s products include PeaceKeeper Lip Paints with names like Paint Me Empowered, Paint Me Intuitive, and Paint Me Open-Minded—sold in stores such as Henri Bendel and select Nordstroms—as well as nail polish, lip gloss and soon, nut bars. And PeaceKeeper’s not stopping there. “We are planning to start our own foundation so we can give grants to women doing extraordinary things,” Weiss says.

I'm continually inspired and energized by the women – and men – who make up one of the city's most amazing professional organizations. I'm also in a pretty great position as managing editor of the print newsletter, as I get to "see" what's going on in peoples' lives, their businesses, and share their accomplishments
and sorrows.
