Founder and President, Indian Bread Co

2008 NAWBO-NYC Signature Awards
Promise Award Honoree

Ms. Mukherjee
has led a multi-faceted life! She had come to New York armed with a degree in architecture and an offer from Columbia University to pursue M.S in architecture & urban design. However, an avid interest in lighting made her join the lighting program at Parsons School of Design. While pursuing her Masters degree at Parson School of Design, Ms. Mukherjee found Indian food in NYC left her disappointed. She realized that there was a market for fresh, flavorful, and portable Indian food at reasonable prices. This led to the germination of an idea which was eventually realized as Indian Bread Co. After graduation, she spent a year working in a prestigious lighting design firm while preparing to open Indian Bread Co. She took courses at The Institute of Culinary Education and the French Culinary Institute to live the American dream of being a successful restaurateur. Ms. Mukherjee defined success when her dream of a contemporary, fast-casual Indian café was turned into reality in 2003.

Now, as the founder and President of Indian Bread Co., Ms. Mukherjee has proved that there are no boundaries in business. The basic concept
of marrying Indian flavors with the portability and convenience of the American sandwich, struck a chord. The New York Times applauded IBC for “making creating use of Naan.” while New York Metro raved “This café effortlessly blends cultures between slices of bread. It also fuses fast food and quality dining.”

In 2006, Ms. Mukherjee was awarded the Make Mine A $Million BusinessTM award. The award consists of mentoring, money and marketing assistance. In 2007, Indian Bread Co. won the Cisco Technological Award package, wherein Cisco sponsored equipment worth $20,000 to set up a technological frame-work to match the business growth vision... Indian Bread Co. has catered for The Republican National Convention, The Tribeca Film Festival, The New York Fashion week. IBC’s regular customers include Norah Jones, Mira Nair and Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Ms. Mukherjee hopes to see Indian street food included in the mainstream American fast-casual sector. Her vision is to grow Indian Bread Co. into a multi-unit enterprise, and she continues working towards her goal.

I'm continually inspired and energized by the women – and men – who make up one of the city's most amazing professional organizations. I'm also in a pretty great position as managing editor of the print newsletter, as I get to "see" what's going on in peoples' lives, their businesses, and share their accomplishments
and sorrows.
