Hilda Polanco is the managing director and founder of Fiscal Management Associates (FMA), a specialized consulting firm that provides support to not-for-profit organizations. In just eight years, FMA has grown to more than 25 professional staff who have helped hundreds of not-for-profit organizations to create and maintain the fiscal infrastructure necessary to meet their operating demands. Hilda has shaped FMA into an organization that possesses the extraordinary ability to translate technical financial knowledge into practical steps that front-line nonprofit financial staff can swiftly apply to achieve their goals. An immigrant from Cuba, Hilda has always been a forger of new paths, a woman with optimism and razor-sharp foresight that enables her to overcome obstacles and have an impact on her community with fresh, innovative ideas. In 2007, in order to address a critical deficiency of specialized programs for the development of nonprofit financial leadership, Hilda spearheaded the creation of the FMA Institute, a unique source of programs through which nonprofit leaders expand their financial and leadership skills, as well as a source for ongoing support and peer-to- peer networking opportunities. A member and past president of the Not-for-Profit Services Association, a national association of CPAs committed to serving nonprofits, Hilda co-authored and is an instructor for its Certified Nonprofit Accounting Professional program. She is also an adjunct professor with Columbia University, teaching graduate courses in the Universitys Department of Health Policy and Management and leading fiscal workshops for Columbias Institute for Not-for-Profit Management.
A nationally recognized expert in the independent sector, Hilda received HISPANIC Magazines Latina Excellence Award for Community Service in 2003, and was honored in 2004 by The Womens Housing and Economic Development Corporation (WHEDCO) for outstanding leadership in the field of nonprofit finance. In 2007, she was invited by the New York Times Company to serve on the on-going selection committee for the annual NY Times Nonprofit Excellence Awards.
Hilda is a member of Metro NY Better Business Bureau Foundations Hispanic Advisory Committee, and currently is serving as a board officer for Governance Matters, a nonprofit that educates, convenes, and advocates for good governance within New York Citys nonprofit organizations. She is a member of the New York State Society of CPAs, its Not-for-Profit Organizations Committee, and the American Institute of CPAs, as well as a featured speaker at their annual conferences. Hilda lives in Staten Island, New York, with her husband and two teenage sons.

I'm continually inspired and energized by the women and men who make up one of the city's most amazing professional organizations. I'm also in a pretty great position as managing editor of the print newsletter, as I get to "see" what's going on in peoples' lives, their businesses, and share their accomplishments
and sorrows.
