The Working Families Time to Care Act (A 7130)
The New York State Paid Family Leave Coalition is advocating for the expansion of current NYS Family Leave Act. NAWBO NYC supports the legislation; it is a modest increase that will provide the flexibility for employees to receive some coverage and time off to take care of ill a family member. Employees are valuable assets and the question before employers and employees is how do we handle and balance personal and family crisis in the work place? Following is a press realease from the coalition with information about the their activities. The Working Families Time to Care Act (A 7130) has been introduced, now is the time to learn and to ask important questions about these issues.
LOBBY DAY
Working Families Time To Care Act for Paid Family Leave
Tuesday, April 17th, 2007
At a time when a one-income family is a luxury few can afford, changes in family circumstances -- whether it's the birth of a new child or the serious illness of an older relative -- put greater stress on the economic security of families than ever before. Today, sixty-six percent of mothers of young children work outside the home and twenty percent of adults care for an elderly relative. More than three out of four employees (78%) have reported that they have needed time off for family leave but could not afford to take it.
The Working Families Time to Care Act (A 7130) provides a solution that allows working families to care for themselves without risking their economic security. It would expand New York's existing Temporary Disability Insurance (TDI) program (which provides some wage replacement during a worker's own non-work-related temporary disability) to also cover a worker who needs time off to care for a newborn or newly adopted child, or a seriously ill family member. Workers would receive up to 12 weeks of benefits, funded through a modest increase in premiums paid within the existing TDI program.
On Tuesday morning, speakers will present the Time To Care proposal and answer questions from members of the press. Our speakers will include the bill's sponsor and co-prime sponsor:
’ñ† Assemblymember Cathy Nolan , Chair of the Education Committee
